Francisco Vega, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Francisco Vega is originally from Spain. In 1992, Dr. Vega obtained his M.D. from the University Complutense of Madrid, Spain. In 1997, he completed his training in anatomic pathology and obtained his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain. In 1998, he was awarded with the “Manuel Cabaleiro Goas,” an award given by the Official School of Medical Doctors of Orense for the best scientific-medical work of the year, where he was working as a surgical pathologist from 1997-1999. He has written 9 book chapters and more than 60 articles in Spanish and international journals. He was awarded with the grant “Fundacion Pedro Barrie de la Maza” in 1999 to perform research in lymphomas and leukemias at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX (2000-2003). He completed his residency in Pathology in Baylor College of Medicine followed by his fellowship in Hematopathology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 2006, he received “The Janice Davis Singletary Award” for Clinical Fellowship in Lymphoma. Dr. Vega is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematopathology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he works as a hematopathologist. His main research interest is in cancer stem cells and self-renewal signaling pathways in lymphomas and leukemias.
