Håkan Mellstedt, M.D., Ph.D.

Håkan Mellstedt is Professor of Oncologic Biotherapy at the Karolinska
Institute and Administrative Director of Cancer Centre Karolinska (CCK) at the
Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. He holds a position as Chief
Physician in the Departments of Oncology and Haematology and is board certified
in Internal Medicine, Oncology and Haematology.
Dr. Mellstedt has published more than 450 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals
and is the author of numerous oncology chapters in professional medical textbooks.
He was awarded the Alfaferone Prize 1989 (Italy) and the J. Waldenström Award
2001 (USA), and he has been invited as a speaker at international meetings more
than 170 times.
He was the Chairman of the Swedish Society of Oncology from 1993 - 2000. He
was the President of ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) Foundation,
dedicated to promoting medical training and research for the benefit of cancer
patients, from 2006 - 2007. Dr. Mellstedt is serving as Past President and Chairman
of the ESMO from 2008 - 2009.
He is Scientific Advisor of the Lundbeck's Foundation (Denmark), Chairman of
the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation, Scientific Secretary of Cancer Society
in Stockholm and King Gustaf 5th Jubilee Foundation, Chairman of the Scientific
Committee evaluating medical research at Radiumhospital/Rikshospital Oslo in Norway,
and Chairman of the Committee for Clinical Medical Research of the Norwegian Research
Council. In addition, he is SAB (science advisory board) member of several biotech
and biopharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Mellstedt's main research areas are tumour immunology and immunotherapy
with a focus on the development of antibody treatment, cytokine therapy and cancer
vaccines in gastrointestinal and chronic B cell malignancies. He has also implemented
a program developing targeted therapy using antibodies, small molecules and vaccines
for CLL.
