Ulf Klein, Ph.D.
Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbia University

Ulf Klein is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pathology, and Microbiology & Immunology at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of Columbia University, New York.

After obtaining his PhD at the University of Cologne in Germany, he moved to the Institute for Cancer Genetics of Columbia University where he spent four years as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow, receiving Long-Term Fellowships from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP). He continued to stay at the Institute as an Associate Research Scientist. In 2009, he was appointed Assistant Professor. He has also served as director of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2007.

As demonstrated by the publication of nearly 50 research articles, reviews and book chapters at this early stage in his career, Ulf Klein’s work has led to novel insights into the cellular derivation of human B-cell malignancies and into the mechanisms that lead to their oncogenic transformation. His current research builds directly on his previous work, which is focused on the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that govern B-cell differentiation and understanding how these mechanisms are disrupted in malignancy, particularly in germinal center lymphomas and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
