Professor Daniel Catovsky obtained his medical degree in Buenos Aires in 1961
and worked for some years at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, before becoming
Head of Haematology at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research
in 1988.
A world authority on chronic adult leukemias, he has held visiting professorships
in many countries, served on the editorial board of 10 national and international
journals and published over 750 papers in peer-reviewed journals. From 1981-98,
he was the 8th most cited researcher in the field of oncology. In 2005 he was
awarded the IWCLL Binet-Rai medal for outstanding contributions to CLL research.
Dr. Catovsky is one of the key people who brought CLL, the most common adult
leukemia, to the attention of the research community. He has been coordinator
of the Medical Research Council Trials on CLL 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. His work in hairy
cell leukemia has helped to transform the prognosis for patients with this disease.
He has served as a member of the Central Institutional Review Board (CRUK), the
International Workshop on CLL Core Group, the NCRI Adult Leukaemia Working Party,
the Scientific Advisory Board of the CLL Global Research Foundation and as Chairman
of the LRF Data Monitoring Committee and the small lymphocytic leukemia sub-committee
WHO classification project.
