Federico Caligaris-Cappio, M.D.

Federico Caligaris-Cappio obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Torino,
Italy in 1973. He specializes in Internal Medicine and Hematology. Dr. Caligaris-Cappio
is a professor of Internal Medicine at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele
in Milano, Italy and is head of the Department of Oncology at the University Hospital
and of the Division of Molecular Oncology at the Scientific Institute San Raffaele
in Milano. He is also a Full Clinical Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit,
MI, USA.
Dr. Caligaris-Cappio is a member of the Roll of Honour, the Union Internationale
Contre le Cancer (U.I.C.C.); the Henry Kunkel Society; a core member of the International
Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (IWCLL); and a member of the Scientific
Board of the CLL Global Research Foundation, Houston, TX
Dr. Caligaris-Cappio's main topics of research are B cell differentiation and
B cell malignancies. His major scientific achievements include the identification
of normal CD5+ B cells in humans, the identification of the major mechanisms that
lead to the accumulation of malignant B cells in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia,
and the identification of the role of bone marrow stromal cells in the growth
of multiple myeloma.
