Jan. A. Burger, M.D., Ph.D. University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Dr. Jan A. Burger, Assistant Professor of Medicine, came to MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005. He received his M.D./Ph.D. degree at Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany, with subsequent clinical training and board certification in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology at Freiburg University Hospital. From 1996 to 1999, Dr. Burger received postdoctoral research training in Hematology and Immunology at the University of California, San Diego, where he studied the molecular mechanism of cross talk between leukemia cells and their microenvironment. In 2006, Dr. Burger received the “Venia legendi” (Habilitation) for Internal Medicine at Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. Dr. Burger's interests are the treatment of patients with acute and chronic leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as his research program that develops pre-clinical and clinical concepts to target the microenvironment in acute and chronic leukemias. His current experimental focus is the function of B cell chemokine receptors, interactions with the B cell receptor, and downstream signaling pathways. Dr. Burger's awards include the Arthur Pappenheim Award by the German Hematology Society, the ASCO Foundation Young Investigator Award, the Kimmel Scholar Award, and the ASCO Career Development Award. Dr. Burger is a member of the American Society of Hematology, German Society of Hematology/Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Association of Cancer Research.
